Today is Bastille Day in France, when the republic celebrates the day it freed itself of the corrupt aristocracy and first united under the French battle cry of Liberty! Equality! Fraternity!

Of course the UK has never had the pleasure of living free from the tyranny of the ruling classes, but our neighbour the Republic of Ireland has had a go. While the Irish are proud of their separatism, the Euro has proved more than risky, the people are still divided by secular in-fighting, and just as here there seems to be no sign of joining together for the common good.

A French friend and real estate professional recently wondered why we, and our Irish cousins, have never had a revolution.

My answer was that we’ve been too busy fighting each other for a loaf of dry bread to go and take a slice of the rich man’s cake;

The French estate agent stated happily that we are obviously not hungry enough yet to start a revolution and that if we don’t eat from the rich man’s leftovers we will soon need to raid his larder. He also suggested that post-revolution, selling the mansions of the rich in a kind of people’s property auction could raise much-needed cash for important public services.

I could only counter that most poor UK citizens spend their time thinking about the X-factor and footballer’s sex lives, and are rarely hungry thanks to cheap fatty frozen food from Asda.

Oh, the French are so much cooler than us… even their estate agents are revolutionaries.
